In 1894, leaders of several Pasadena congregations came together to build bridges over common issues and community concerns, forming what would serve Pasadena for decades as the Ecumenical Council of Pasadena Area Churches (Churches later changed to the more-inclusive interfaith Congregations), energetically working together against poverty and isolation and towards self-sufficiency and mutual support.
In 2014, as Friends In Deed, we continue that 120 years of service, through:
a community food Pantry that serves 1,125 households each month;
The Women's Room , our unique day program providing care and community for 20 homeless and at-risk women regularly;
the Bad Weather Shelter, last year providing over 11,000 shelter beds for those left homeless during the winter season;
We will be celebrating throughout the year with special events, special exciting opportunities to build, give, serve - and party! Watch for news of what's coming up. Make it a point to be part of our lives this year - our Year of Many Friends. We can do what we do only because of friends like you who pray with us, volunteer with us, raise money for us and donate to us. Friends like you are what makes us Friends In Deed - doing together what we cannot do alone.
Friends In Deed has held some wonderful holiday events over the past two months. In November the Pasadena Jaycees distributed fixings for 300 Thanksgiving meals to our pantry clients. This is the largest number we have served to date. In addition we received turkeys and other Thanksgiving foods from the City of Pasadena, Councilmember John Kennedy and many others.
The Women’s Room celebrated Thanksgiving with an abundant feast prepared by the Church of the Ascension in Sierra Madre. Guests of The Women’s Room packed Friends In Deed and enjoyed the delicious meal, giving thanks for all their blessings.
Girl Scouts from the fifth grade at Assumption School decorated holiday cookies and sang carols at The Women’s Room during December. They brought such cheer!
Christmas, of course, follows on the heels of Thanksgiving, and another wonderful holiday party was held for The Women’s Room by Women’s Committee of All Saints Church. Since we have so many Women’s Room guests now, Pasadena Church let us use their church hall. We enjoyed a wonderful Christmas party with a scrumptious ham and fixings, songs, and a solo performed by our Operations Manager, Aileen Duran. In spite of the pouring rain, the hall was jammed full of merry makers!
Thank you all for your generous offerings of food, gifts and holiday feasts for our family at Friends In Deed!
"Friends In Deed thanks all of the community members, sponsors and supporters who came together to make our annual fall concert, Ring in the Holiday Season, a success. With a spectacular concert featuring the Los Angeles Children's Chorus and violinist Alexandra Levatter, a robust auction with more than 65 items and a special celebration of all the work Westrdige School for Girls has done for Friends In Deed over the years, it was a very special night. We thank everyone who came out to support Friends In Deed's work in the community, and hope to see you next year!
In light of the economic downturn, the City of Pasadena and Friends In Deed together are requesting that the business community rise up and lend their support to cover a $60,000 gap left the Bad Weather Shelter funding. We're looking for one hundred pledges of $600 to supplement the $50,000 provided by Friends In Deed through its own fundraising efforts.

We are truly Friends In Deed!!!
At our Annual Meeting on January 31, 2013 the Council voted to change the name of the organization to Friends In Deed with a subtitle Pasadena Area Interfaith Council. There will be a transition time during which we use the ECPAC website, email addresses, etc., but over the next few months will make the needed changes. Checks can still be written to ECPAC or Friends In Deed. We are excited about this change for it will help us with our branding, and will make clearer our status as an interfaith organization.
